New Zealand 2017

December 3rd Sunday

Airyen was a not well, so we had parents come over for a bit, whilst I went and got some medical supplies. Akshey was our driver who dropped us to Gatwick, where we boarded our 8.25pm flight to Dubai. Airyen slept through a lot of the flight but did not have much food or drink. So in Dubai we had a look at changing the ongoing flight, which required a medical certificate of illness, but as there was not enough time between the flight (not helped by the delay taking off) we carried on on our next leg to Auckland direct. We had to work a bit to keep Airyen hydrated.

5th – Tuesday

Arriving in Auckland, Bhavni went ahead with Airyen and took a taxi to Starship, whilst I collected the bags and stroller before heading to collect our hire car for the next few days; a Toyota Camery. Driving was a bit surreal as I recognised bits and pieces. Eventually I made it to starship and found Bhavni and Airyen there. Airyen had perked up re-markedly compared to the flight. The doctors thought he was ok so we headed to the car then north to Whangaparoa, arriving at Sheilina’s house a bit later. Sheilina was there to greet us, then all the children. How much have they grown since we last saw them, and the new addition Rian, 6 days younger then Airyen. Grant was away up north and would be back tomorrow.

We chilled around for the rest of the day and for dinner we had a Thai take away. Due to the drama on the plane, we were tired and went to bed without any real jet lag.

6th – Wednesday

Today was mostly a day to rest. After breakfast,  Sheilina left with the children and went to work; we went out ourselves to Silverdale, just up the road. First stop was to the bank to get our cards reactivated. Quite a pleasant experience, and Airyen got a new toy. After we got some shopping locally and at the supermarket before heading back to Sheilina’s house for lunch – Bagels, hummus and avocado. Sheilina and the children came back after lunch.

I grabbed a short nap, to be woken by Shamil (who told me not to sleep to get over the jetlag!). For the evening I made some Swahili pasta. Grant came a bit late after we had eaten. Sheilina and I headed out to the pub for the quiz, and Grant and Bhavni joined us after round 1 after putting Airyen to sleep. Grants mother was looking after the children at home. Surprisingly we did not do that badly.

7th – Thursday

Sue and Peter

After breakfast, we did some morning packing, and ended up running late. We drove to Epsom to Sues house (No 28) getting there just before 1pm. Sue and Peter greeted us and we made our way to the garden for lunch all home made.

Unfortunately Sue had some bad news, the Grants were going to join us for lunch, however just on Sunday they had been up at their house in the north, Joice left a bit early, but when she got to Auckland she got the news that her husband had been found in the water. That was really shocking news.

Opening the book

After food, with Airyen making it from outside to inside, he got a nice little present – a proper kiwi book about a yellow tractor.

We then went over and paid our condolences to Joice, then set out back for Sheilina’s. Finishing some more packing we then stayed in and retired early (Grant and Sheilina were going into town).

8th – Friday

Bannnnannnna

After breakfast and a bye for now, we headed out catching the SH1 north. We stopped at 11ish for a coffee and a break for Airyen, at a cafe called Salt n Pepper. One whole banana, tea and flat white later, we were back on the road. This time to Whangerei, where we drove into the town center.

Getting the feet wet

We went to one cafe, but were not impressed by the look, so after a quick search and 5 minute walk we ended up at the Mokaba Cafe just after 12.30. It was a nice lunch, including chips and a butternut squash salad.

Back on the road we carried on until Airyen needed to get out of his car seat, so a stop at a nursery, then the last push until we arrived at By the Bay Beachfront Apartments in Coopers Beach at 5pm. After checking in we went for a walk on the beach.

This is grass…

Airyen got to put his feet in the water – He was not impressed. Back at the room we chilled on the veranda until dinner time. After Airyen was going to sleep I picked up a take away from from the thai restaurant in Manganui.

9th – Saturday

A walk on the beach

After a simple breakfast of cereal, we went for a long walk on coopers beach right the way from one side to the other. Then we went into town for a look around – there is not much. Lunch was at the Little Kitchen; the seagulls there are really daring, you cant leave a table for more then 2 seconds.

We then visited the Rangikapiti Pa Reserve, which had a road up a long way. I could push the pushchair up much of the gravel path, but the last bit was not suitable for it, so Bhavni and I took turns climbing up and seeing the view of the whole bay and surrounds.

Getting back to the car we then took a drive past cable bay and then up onto the Karikari peninsula; this was actually the way to the Carrington resort that Sheilina was going to go to later. We had come a fair way, so took a while to get back. Sitting on the veranda we introduced Airyen to grass. He was not impressed by the feel of it and tried to keep lifting his feet high.

The managers were having a staff party and when Airyen and I went past he was really the topic of conversation. Dinner was a takeaway from the Indian, the dar was nice but the chilly panner was not really good.

10th – Sunday

Pahia

In the morning we had breakfast and then gave the washing to the managers to do on our behalf. Whilst this was going on we went for a short walk on the beach. We had to wait a little while for the washing to be finished.

Driving south at 10am, our next stop was in Pahia. We parked and had a little walk around before stopping for a coffee and some sour bread at the Alongside cafe. We were on nice couches and Airyen got a little entertainment from a self professed crazy American.

Arjun and Imani

The next stop was again in Whangerei. I dropped Bhavni off at a shopping complex near by so she could go to Briscos to buy some kitchen supplies. I then drove to the riverside, parked and then went to the Quay cafe. It was quite busy, so with the push chair I tried to get the attention of one of the staff, but he was strange. Finding a seat, Bhavni arrived, so we got our lunch, including chips and toasted sandwiches.

After lunch it was a straight drive to Sheilina’s apart from the traffic at Warkworth. Making it to Sheilinas, we chilled with the children and made some dinner. We also had to do packing for tomorrow.

11th – Monday

In the morning we had to finish packing. We said bye for now to Imani,Arka and Arjun as they were going to school. We left around 11am and drove to return the car. All ok with it, we were dropped to the airport and then checked in. The gate was a really small building, and mr man was a bit fidgety.

The view from the restaurant

Slightly late we boarded the small prop plane and were on our way to Nelson. Arriving, Bhavni went to look after Airyen whilst I collected the bags (just outside on a trolly) then got the rental car. Getting to the car we noticed that the baby seat was fitted front facing, so we had to get that changed, which took a while as the seat was faulty for back facing.

The plan was to stop at a vineyard, but it was too late, so we drove to Motueka and stopped at the countdown there getting supplies.

Then it was to Kimi Ora Eco Resort. We checked in cleaned up and then went for dinner. It was a nice view, but really hot in the sun, so we sat on  the side in the shadow of the building. The restraunt was pure veg, so there was not problem about ordering, however the salad had hair in it, not just one but many. Telling the staff they played the blame game, with even the owner saying that it was likely our hair as no one in the kitchen had that hair.

After Mr was asleep we just chilled.

12th – Tuesday

Split Apple Rock

We had breakfast nice and early in the restaurant, sitting outside; mostly breads and cereal, after which we headed into the local town and got our tickets  for the cruise – a small tour of the close  highlights of Abel Tasmin.

A nice beach

We had to wait on the beach for a little while before we could board, so we enjoyed the morning sun. Boarding we sat right at the top; a bit exposed and blustery when sailing at speed. The first stop was the Split Apple rock, then the various beaches up the coast. We saw some wildlife as well including seals. Bhavni and Airyen went downstairs to get out of the breeze after a while. I joined them nearer the end of the outgoing part, after which we departed the boat onto a beach – boundary bay. Here we got a little while to rest before the next boat came to pick us up for the return journey. It was a bigger boat, but we stayed on the first deck watching out.

Part of dinner

Getting back, we went to the restaurant there, to have a drink and food time for Mr.

Back at the accommodation we rested for a bit then we went for a swim in the afternoon, the water was not that hot though.

For dinner we had the salad – this time with no hairs and some sort of gnocchi thing. We took our desert as a take away and then tried to play some board games in the room – but resorted to a bit of TV.

13th – Wednesday

Viewpoint on the way

In the morning we had breakfast inside the restaurant, giving Mr a chance to play. We then finished up and checked out. Then it was a gentle drive south. Originally I had planned to go to St Arnoud, but as the drives were quite long we abandoned that idea and drove past stopping in Murchison. There we had a little walk around and then went to the Beechwoods cafe for some tea and food for all of us. The weather had gotten a bit cloudy on the way here, but was still fine.

On the deck

After it was a drive on the SH6 towards Westport, then south to Punakaki. It had rained somewhat here, and was quite cloudy. There were a few stops along the coast for some nice views. When we go to the Beachfront Motels, I parked up and met the owner. Originally we were booked in a small chalet, but there were lots of works going on, so he had moved us to a larger 2 bedroom property – basic but ok. So after the intro we offloaded the car and chilled for a bit, out on the deck. Here there was no phone reception, and there was no supermarket and no shops as such – I did not expect that!

Pancake Rocks

So after a while we set off to the pancake rocks area, and had dinner at the cafe there – pizza, which was quite good. After we crossed the road and went around the pancake rocks. It was quite stratospheric as it was cloudy and breezy and near high tide. Some very interesting rocks and formations. The blowholes were not quite roaring though, just rumbling. The cafe sold milk, which was quite useful for our supplies. We got some ice creams.

Getting back, it was some relaxing and a bit of tv watching, along with the ice cream.

14th – Thursday

Touching a Fern

The day dawned much nicer, with blue skies. We had breakfast then drove to the Punakaki river car park. We had a nice walk along the river walk. Mr was well covered for the walk and had a nice sleep on the way. We had read that there are not that many steps, but near the latter half there were numerous steps.

The River

At the end of the trail we stopped and had a nice break, eating some fruit on some logs on the side. The return journey was good also, though it got warmer.

Bhavni went across the road to check out the tavern, before we went back to the accommodation to rest for a bit. We went for a small walk later along the rocky beach then got back in the car for a drive up Bullock Creek road, getting up to the point where it became a 4×4 road only.

Bullock Creek

It was then dinner time, so we drove back and walked to the taven. We sat outside in the “garden” and got talking to some others who had some small children. Airyen sat on the grass very stiffly trying to avoid as much contact as possible.

3 babes on the grass

For dinner we had chips, garlic bread and pizza. One of the guys asked where we came from and knew the area. As we were leaving he shouted Go Watford – as in the football team.

We went back to the accommodation and chilled before bed (well apart from the fun of trying to do the washing in the dark).

15th – Friday

In Ross

After our morning breakfast, it was time to check out and get on the road. We drove directly to Graymouth, which is quite a big town. We decided to get some provisions, so we stopped to shop in countdown, which was visible from the main road but a slight diversion off it. Replenished and refueled we then drove to Hokitika, where we stopped again for coffee and Airyen to have some food at Stumpers bar and cafe. The weather had degraded and was drizzling. Setting off again we then drove only to Ross, which was not that far, in which time the rain had turned into mostly sunny conditions, where we stopped for lunch in a small cafe there. We had a toasted sandwich each, but no chips – a very small place.

At Lake Matherson Cafe

Then it was a drive to Fox Glacier. As we drove it got cloudy again and soon turned to rain. Lots of rain. Bhavni drove from Franz Joseph to Fox, where we got to our accommodation – Fox Glacier Mountainview. We passed a lady on a ride on mower, who turned out to be our host. We got shown our room, then had a sit down with the owner and talked about the area over tea, whilst Airyen had fun in a walker.

Cloudy Mountains

We then went back to the room and cleaned up. We then got in the car then headed to Lake Matherson. We then had a little walk to the lake, then headed back to the Reflection cafe that was there. There we had a nice dinner and desert. We then went back, put Mr to sleep and then watched some tv.

16th – Saturday

Early morning and awake

Waking up early, we had a look outside – the mountain peaks were not covered, so we got ready quickly and drove to Lake Matherson, where we started the walk.

Reflection … check

We got to the first lookout and were still in luck, the lake was mostly quiet and we could see a good reflection. After a bit there we carried on to the main lookout, where we met a tourist who had been there a while trying to get good shots. He had tried on a number of occasions before also – but he was a bit more hardcore – having travelled 14h in the car the day before. We got some more nice photos, then carried on back to the car park. The mountains kept on going behind cloud after this.

Driving back, we quickly got ready and then went to breakfast (as we were later than the time we said we were going to have breakfast). Airyen enjoyed the walker.

Nice and warm

Packing stuff we needed we drove back to Frans Joseph. Our first stop was the kiwi center, that was recommended to us. The experience was so so, only a small section with one kiwi in the dark – Airyen did not like this area. Then there were a bit of displays which we had a look at before leaving. By now it was nearly Airyens lunch time, so we went to a restaurant called The Landing and got some food there sitting outside.

We then went to the hot pools, where we had booked a private pool. It was quite a nice setting, and after a bit of persuasion, Airyen got in and thoroughly enjoyed himself.

As Bhavni went to the shower she complained that the water was cold – soon after the staff told us the power was out and we had to leave. We had had 40 mins of our hour and got refunded.

Dinner Time

By now the weather had turned and it was drizzling, so we went to the tourist information to ask what to do – it turns out we had done nearly all we could do with the weather as it was.

So we drove back – taking a diversion to the glacier approach (where the vis of the glacier was better, but still really bad in the rain).

After warming up, we went for dinner to Cafe Neve, where we had pizza on the veranda.

17th – Sunday

Driftwood on the beach

After breakfast, we finished up in the room and said bye to owner of the B&B. It was then time to head off south towards Haast.  Our first stop was at a beach – ship creek – where there was a lookout and access to the sand through some forest. We had a little walk around here and took some photos before heading back in the car.

Our next stop was in Haast itsself for Lunch. After a little deliberation we went to the Hard Antler Bar for loaded nachos and other stuff. It had a bit of taxidermy going on, but otherwise was no problem.

Towers at the falls

Back on the road it was south again towards Wanaka. Our first stop was at the Roaring Billy Falls. Quiet walk down to the river bed with the falls up on the other side. The next stop was the Fantail falls. This was busier, and we did as others and balanced some rocks in piles. We then stopped at the famous blue pools. These were quite busy and a longish walk as there was a big decent. We saw plenty of people complaining about sandflies, so we really covered up and used the deet on all of us. With the heat and sun it was a bit extra a slog. Well the pools were not blue today – sort of green. Not really amazing today.

Not so blue pools

Back on the road we started towards the pass. By Makarora, the sky had opened up and as we continued it became torrential, with visibility rubbish. This weather continued past the neck and most of Lake Hawea, only easing by the time we got to Albert town.

Wanaka Lake

As we got the the place Shamil had booked in Wanaka, at 4pm we were back in sun. We parked and got ourselves in, offloaded the car and gave Shamil a call. He was in town, and came back. After a bit we went together into town and parked near the lakeside, where we had a bit of a roam around. We then went to The Spice Room for dinner, ordered too much food, so a take away. Back at the accomodation we chilled and watched a bit of netflix on shamils laptop.

18th – Monday

View from Mount Iron Summit

We had a simple breakfast, then got in the car and drove to the Mount Iron track, and parked in the semi busy car park. It was a hot day, so we had to cover Airyen and Bhavni carried him. It was a good walk to the top, where the views were quite nice.

At a winery

We spent a bit of time up the top, before decending on the other path – which was a much harder route. We had to walk a bit around the hill at the bottom to get to the car park.

After we went to the Lavander farm. Airyen and Bhavni went to sleep there, so Shamil and I had some lavander tea. We then went to a couple of wineries – Atkens Folly and Maudes – where we sat and had some food some wine sampling.

Getting back to the apartment we relaxed for a bit before Shamil and I picked up a take away pizza from the Cow.

19th – Tuesday

Today we decided to go on a bigger trip, so after breakfast we got in the car and drove to town where we talked to the rangers at the mount Aspiring tourist site, who said that that way was cloudy and webcams confirmed this.

So we instead decided to go to Cromwell. It was only an hour away, so we found ourselves a cherry picking farm, where we had a bit of fun collecting cherries. I think we ended up collecting a good 2Kg of them – not including the ones that we ate – including Mr who was exposed to this new fruit.

For lunch we went to the Wooing Tree, having some bits and some desert.

It was then back to Wanaka and the apartment for a while to relax. Soon enough we were out again, where we went into town and lake front to chill for a bit.

Diamond Lake

We then drove to diamond lake where we did the lake walk – Bhavni could not face another climb. No one believed me the lake walk was only an hour, they all assumed that it was much longer.

We then did a bit more of a drive towards mount Aspiring, until the road turned unsealed, after which we headed back. We spotted the lookout for mount Aspiring, where we got a couple of good views and we got Airyen ro pose on a tree branch.

Bhavni wanted to go to Patigonia to get some deserts but it was closed, so we went to one of the cafes there and had dinner.

We then went to see “That Wanaka Tree”, lots of people were taking photos, including wedding shots being done.

Back at the apartment we had a cheese and wine evening watching some netflix.

20th – Wednesday

After breakfast we spent a bit of time cleaning up the house and finishing all the stuff we had to do. We then said our goodbyes to Shamil, who was heading for the mountains, whilst we were headed to Queenstown. We stopped for a final view from the waterfront before heading up the Cardrona valley road. It was not that long a trip, though there were lots of slow drivers around.

When we got to Queenstown, it was the ususal search for parking, (including the quick pit stop at the library parking) but we managed to park not too far away – we did not even try right in town as that was busy.

Lunch Time

Our first stop was the Patagonia cafe where we had our mexican churros, having a chat with some italian tourists. Then some sight seeing and window shopping. For lunch we stopped at Ivys kitchen and bar, having a quite filling meal.

Soon enough we had to head to the airport (a bit of a harder walk to the car uphill). We checked in and then I returned the car keys. As usual the 3.40 flight to Auckland was a little late, but we were soon back in the north island after a ok flight.

We had to wait a little while for the Go rental car to pick us up – for some reason they also thought we would be at the international terminal. We waited outside, which was fine if blustery. At the rental place, all seemed to be going fast (even though it was quite late by now), but then the baby seat took a while to fit. Then there was a real caffuffle as they realised they had given us the wrong car – though exactly the same spec as the one we should have had, which was just next to it. Well after they said they were going to make us change, Bhavni went in guns blazing and sorted that silly notion out.

So it was a bit of a later drive to Custom Street West. Bhavni jumped out and grabbed the keys and fob for the apartments from the local dairy. We parked and offloaded a bit, went up and gave Airyen his dinner. Whilst Bhavni put him to sleep I finished offloading the car and then went to the local metro and bought some supplies to make Agli oli for dinner (forgetting the oil, luckily there was the dairy).

21st – Thursday

Today we decided after a relaxed breakfast outside on the rooftop balcony area to go shopping. We headed for Newmarket, remembering the Farmers there – does not exist anymore. We had a quick round there, but due to parking not knowing what was there, we diverted to St Lukes. It was busy, but Bhavni found some parking. We did some general shopping, had some food and I spent a little time at ASB to get to the bottom of why out points were not working – the short answer was they would not today.

After we headed back to the apartments, parked then headed out for a walk down Queens street. A bit of window shopping then we stopped for a drink before heading back.

Originally we were going to get a take away for dinner, but we decided to go out to Grasshopper Thai. It was a nice dinner, with Airyen getting plenty of attention also (though he nearly managed to climb through the seat).

22nd – Friday

After breakfast we headed out. I had decided to see my old workplace – Sitehost. They had moved, 5 minutes drive away. I was greeted by Nathan, who opened the door and exclaimed “Dr Shah”. I was shown around the place, much larger then the old place, only Nathan and Quentin were there who I knew. We had some coffee and talked about the new offices and my old colleagues, with Bhavni and Airyen joining us. Quentin said a quick hello.

Cafe near Mt Eden

We then went to Cornwell park and had lunch at the bistro there, which was nice. The cloud was so low that we could not go to the lookout in the park.

We then went towards mount eden. I dropped Bhavni off at Twenty Tree cafe to see one of her friends, whilst I went for a drive as Airyen was sleeping (including a drive up Mount Eden). I joined Bhavni after he woke up an hour later, and had a coffee, before saying bye.

Not the feet

The next stop was to Kohimarama to meet Bhavnis other friend Silvia, spotting her on the boardwalk after we had got Airyens feet wet. We had a look at the restaurant there, very limited so we drove to Mission bay and went to an Italian – Mama Mia.

Meeting Silvia

The manager was a bit rude, almost like he did not want our custom – He said to his staff dont set up the table as we are just looking even though we had told the waitress to carry on. After dinner we had a walk on the beach and sat near the fountains for a while.

Dropping Silvia back, we headed back to the appartments. Whils Bhavni chilled I went for a drive to Whangaparoa, to get our bags from Sheilina and Grants place. Grant was there, with a full house, I had some tea and then drove back.

23rd – Saturday

Our last day here, we had breakfast on the terrace and finished up with the packing, putting the bags in the car. Bhavni made some mikshakes with the last of the bananas and mik as we were expecting Silvia. Though as she was running late we made our way to the Soul Bar, just around the corner, which we had booked.

Soul Bar

After Silvia turned up we had some starters before I had to go move the car (and leave the keys in the apartment). That was not fun as I could not find any decent parking nearby and after a good 20 mins went and left the car in a loading zone to get back to the looks of relief by the girls (I had left my phone on the table). Bhavni went to try her luck in moving the car and came back in 5 minutes after finding spaces just outside. Anyway the food was very nice and after finishing it off and the obligatory photos we said good bye to Silvia and her son.

It was then a drive to Whangaparoa and Sheilinas. We went to Grants shop to see him and let him know we are going to go to his house after a bit, so he could let us in to the house via remote. We then went to the New World and bought some wine and chocolates.

Back at the house we were let in through the garage, where we did some final packing. Grant came home soon after, and a little while later Sheilina and her family came in. It was a hello to all including her parents. We spent some time relaxing, making Airyens dinner and even having a demo of professional trampoline by Grants guests. Soon it was time to leave, Sheilina managed to take Airyen and keep him (he was refusing to go to anyone apart from us). We said our good byes to all and left.

We dropped the car, got dropped to the airport and checked in. We had some time so we did some shopping, getting the kiwi toy and then had some noodle soup. The flight was pretty uneventful, we had plenty of room, but our food was not ordered again. I noticed we seemed to be changing course – an hour later we got an announcement that there was bad weather in Dubai, so we were refuelling in Colombo. After that we resumed our flight, but at Dubai we spent the next 2 hours just circling until we could land.

Arriving we found our flight had long gone, So we had the fun of seeing about the rebooking. Bhavni and Airyen got separated from me when I tried to join another queue, but by the time they joined me at a different counter I had managed to get the rebooking sorted. We then got this confirmed with new tickets at another counter.

We had a good 3 hours until we had to be back at the boarding gate, so Bhavni thought we could go see Meera. We got to the exit, but apparently the immigration queue was over an hour. Nearly giving up after talking to the staff, a family which required special needs came, and they opened a counter just for them (and us), so we got through and took a taxi to her house. There we met Meera, her parents and the little 5 week baby. We had some food and tea, then rushed back using an Uber that Meera had called. Airyen threw up a bit on me in the car – too much motion and rushing. We got in and after all that we found that our plane was delayed another hour.

As Airyen was not great, we decided to go into the lounge and try to relax for a bit (it was a bit expensive but we were tired). We had some food and let Airyen sleep a bit. Getting onto the next flight, we had the whole middle isle, but again our food was not correct. It was a bit of a tiring flight and when we got to Gatwick we found that we had a bag missing. After going to the baggage services we eventually found that the bag was there, it just had not been put on the conveyor and had been left outside. We got the bag (which was open at the zip) and got a slow taxi ride home arriving at 11pm – nearly 12 hours later then expected.

America 2016

Friday 17th

Waking up we had our taxi to Heathrow booked for 8.45am, but the flight was delayed for about an hour, so we delayed the taxi till 9.15am. We got to the airport quite early, so had time for Bhavni to buy some sun glasses and have a drink.

Night @ LA Live
Night @ LA Live

As we went to board we found our selves selected for a bag check (conspiracy thoughts from Bhavni as she reckoned in security they made her wait so she had to go through the tighter check). Anyway when we got on, we settled in for the flight which was generally ok, with us even getting some sleep, though the food was a bit sub par (Bhavnis was all potato).

We arrived at 4.10pm local, breezed through immigration, got the bags and then found the shuttle to Alamo. We ended up picking a red 4×4 jeep (after too much hanging around). It was then a bit of a drive to Romada LA Downtown West, where we checked in an freshened up before heading out to LA Live, where we ate some food in Yard House (Slightly strange food but we managed to find some veg options). After dinner we pretty much drove to the hotel and called it a night.

Saturday 18th

In Hollywood
In Hollywood

We were up reasonably early, getting out of the hotel by around 7.30. We drove to Denny’s for breakfast, where Bhavni was introduced to the pancakes – One slam (4 things) was enough for us both. We then drove to a parking lot that I had seen near the Hollywood walk of fame ($7 all day). From here it was a walk along the road, occasionally recognising a name or 2, towards the Chinese theatre and the mall there. From the mall you can see the Hollywood sign quite nicely, whilst at the Chinese theatre there was the cement imprints of famous hands. We had a drink and a pretzel in the sun before heading back to the car, via some souvenir shops.

Overlooking The City
Overlooking The City

The next stop was the viewpoint on Mulholland drive (Hollywood bowl viewpoint), which had great views over the hazy city scape. Here we had some Indians slightly nudge our car, but deny it after I ask. From here we carried on the Mulholland drive for a bit, then made our way to Santa Monica Blvd then up and down Rodeo Drive, before following the road to Santa Monica. We parked and made our way to the walking street, where Bhavni ducked into a fast food Mexican restaurant (Chipotle) – ok food. We then ambled up the road buying a few things until we had to go move the car, which we moved to another car park. We then went accross onto the famous pier. Talk about crowded – the beach was quite full and the pier was heaving. Wondering around for a while, we then headed back to the car, getting a nice drink on the way at the mall, then a shopping stop at sears where we picked up some stuff.

Busy Beach @ Santa Monica
Busy Beach @ Santa Monica

Driving back we got a bit of traffic, but all in all was not that bad. Back at the hotel we chilled for a bit before having a round (with a stop at wallgreens for some supplies and water).

Sunday 19th

Ragged Point
Ragged Point

Checking out reasonably early, we were soon on our way taking the 101. About an hour and a half later we got off at Santa Barbara, to get some food. Most of the shops were still closed as it was 9ish, but we found a busy restaurant called Joes. I thought I would indulge, having eggs Florentine, but regretted it later as I felt not great after, so we had a walk around for a bit before setting off on the long ocean drive to San Francisco.

Just before crossing the bridge
Just before crossing the bridge

We stopped at Ragged point for a break, having tea and coffee and a stretch of the legs. Bhavni had a bit of a snooze during the journey, and it was almost 7Pm by the time we got to San Francisco. We decided to head straight to the Golden Gate Bridge, however I managed to take the wrong off ramp, so we got introduced to the crazy hills and the cool views. Eventually we got to the bridge and got off at the viewpoint before the entrance for some photos before heading over the bridge to the upper viewpoints. This was great as the view was clear and we had got there for near sunset time, so the colours were really splendid.

After we headed back to town and got to our hotel (Diva which was right near Union Square), checked in and then drove the car to the nearby parking I had booked. After we freshened up we went for dinner at Uncle Vitos, grabbing a takeaway pizza for the next morning.

Monday 20th

Trolly Car
Street Car

We were out of the hotel by 8am, taking the F streetcar to pier 33. We were there early enough that we had some time to look around before boarding the boat. We went to the top deck, for good views of the bridge (despite the crazy tourist who insisted that she and her partner can fit in a space for one). The boat only took about 15 minutes to get to Alcatraz, where we disembarked and then listened to the ranger talk about the island.

Prison Cell in Alcatraz
Prison Cell in Alcatraz

There was a talk on Indianlands that was starting at 10, so after getting the Beautiful Park pass, we waited around until the talk started. It was a talk on the Indian occupation of Alcatraz as protest about their conditions, and took us slowly to the top. We then joined the main audio tour of the jail house, which was quite a good tour of the facility, there was even a demo of the closing of the cell doors. After the tour we made our way back to the dock (a few closed paths non withstanding).

Steep Road
Steep Lombard Street

Getting back to the mainland, we walked past the other piers towards Fishermans Wharf, getting the required ice cream. We found a camera shop which allowed Bhavni to get a replacement part. There was not much vegetarian looking food here0, so we headed up the hill in the heat (steep climb) to the bottom of Lombard street. This was a great view as you could see the curving road framed by the hydrangeas. Climbing the street we then got on a cable car getting off at china town. Here I found a shop selling bubble tea (which was most welcome). We then wondered around eventually finding ourselves back near union square for some shopping. Getting hungry we got a bagel at the place that Nirav recommended and then saw the Mac store he had a hand in. We then got back to the hotel. I did some bits and pieces for back in London whilst Bhavni went back out  for a walk and some extra shopping.

China Town
China Town

Bhavni had read about a restaurant located on Valencia street, so after getting the hotel to ring but no answer, we headed out towards there. We gave up walking as it was a bit dodgy looking and got a tram instead. However getting to the restaurant, we found it was closed with a paper written note on the front. So we had a walk around the area looking for any other places of interest which was futile, though a bit scary when walking past groups of people loitering round streets. So we caught the tram back and went to the Thai restaurant next door for food.

Bhavni Gazes at a large Stump

After checking out of the hotel, we took a slightly wrong freeway exit out of the city, which meant that we were on the way to Sacramento. Toying with the idea of going there, we decided it would be too long (and we had already gone over a toll bridge), so we changed from the 80 to the 88 towards Jackson. Then going south towards Angels Camp we passed through the town of San Andreas (Grand Theft Auto fame). We got out at Angels Camp, to have a look, but pretty much all the shops were closed, however the visitor centre was open and the lady there was very friendly, and suggested what to do.

Queen of the forest
Mother of the forest

We found ourselves on the way to the national forest passing Murphys and going to Big Trees State park (North Grove). The entrance fee was $10 (since it is a state park and not part of the national parks). The initial thought was to do a small wonder as it was getting a bit later than I had planned for, but in the end we did the whole circuit of trees. The first “tree” we came across was the “Discovery Tree”, which is a massive stump over 7m wide and all that remains. It was over 1200 years old. There were lots of massive trees, with quite a few named. However the saddest one was the Mother of the Forest, which was a massive (98m) old (2525 years) of which only a 30m burnt stump remains as the guy who discovered it had the barked stripped to show around.

Under a tree
Under a tree

After the walk we then made out way back to Baker, where we had some ice cream as most of the restaurants were closed, we then went to the supermarket to get some supplies for the next day, before heading to Senora to the Best western plus. For dinner as we did not fancy going far, so we ate dinner at the on site pine restaurant. Ok they got Bhavnis Pasta wrong by adding meatballs, then just removed them, then had to make a new batch – other wise ok food. Before bed we made some sandwiches.

Wednesday 22nd

Near Venal Falls
Near Vernal Falls

Today was another early rise day. Getting ready, we went to the Pine restaurant for breakfast, so much busier. It took a bit of time to get food ordered and to our table, but all in all we were out and on the road before 7am. We took the old priest road up, then it was a long drive on the flats to get to Yosemite. We managed to drive and park at the half dome village, but we just missed a bus by the time we got our selves sorted. Luckily it was not too long before the next bus came along and we soon found our selves getting off at the Happy Isles stop and crossing the bridge to the start of the Mist trail by 9am.

Above Navada Falls
Above Navada Falls

The trail was going to be a long one at 540m high. The first target after the bridge was the top of the Vernal fall, this was cool as the trail lived up to its name as we were covered in spray (mist) from the waterfall as we climbed the stone steps. It was nice and cooling so it helped us not realise the effort we were exerting, though we had to watch our footing a little on the slick surfaces. At the top of the fall was a nice area where we sat and had a rest and some snacks, being careful to not let the chipmunks get our food or in our bags.

Lower Yosemite Fall
Lower Yosemite Fall

The next climb to the top of the Navada fall was a bit more difficult as it was now much hotter and there was no cooling mist this time. Getting to the top, we took some time for photos before sitting under the shade of a tree and having our lunch, with views of the famous half dome next to us. For the way down we took the Muir trail (after finding the right route). This was a much gentler trail then trying to go down the stairs and we also got some soaking from mini waterfalls at the beginning. Finishing our walk we took the bus back to the parking lot and got ready to head out.

Half dome from the pass out
Half dome from the pass out

We drove out of the valley (taking some pictures on the way) getting back onto the 120, but heading east instead, towards the high pass. There were some really cool views on the way, the first being a look back over to the valley from a viewpoint, being able to see the half dome clearly. Then we passed lots of high meadows, then we had a little walk around Tenaya lake.

Near the pass
Near the pass summit

At the top of the pass (and the exit of the park) we were near 10,000 foot. Then it was a decent to Lee Vining, where we had a quick stop to have a look at the salt lake there (the visitor centre was closed). We could only see some of the formations from a distance. So we carried on to Baker, where we checked into the Travelodge and freshened up. Asking where to go for dinner, we were advised that the Italian The Upper Crust was good, and she did not know how the Mexican would be for us – it was not as all the food (even the rice) had meat in it. So it was Italian, too much food ordered – including a dozen mozzarella sticks and a pasta each, but it was decent.

Thursday 23rd

Straight Road to Death Valley
Straight Road to Death Valley

As we knew it was going to be hot, it was another early start. We had a quick breakfast – cereal and then some toast, then we headed out by 6.25am.

The drive south from Bishop was to Lone Pine was quite scenic as it was a lot more lush (relatively) then the other side of the mountains, with the two mountain chains on either side. From Lone pine the road headed towards the western mountains on the 190, and towards Panament Springs.

Sand Dunes
Sand Dunes

This was a climb up the pass, with the vegetation rapidly dwindling, until we emerged into the next valley (and into Death Valley). This was proper desert, with salt flats in the distance and bare mountains. We had a few cars coming every now and then sparodicly in the opposite direction, but otherwise we were alone on the straight roads.

At Badwater basin
At Badwater basin

Getting over the next lot of mountains with an even more alien landscape, we got into the main valley and made our way towards Stovepipe wells – another small place. We then next had a quick stop to look at the Mesquite Flats sand dunes (though I did not walk far into them). We then drove past Furnace Creek and turned onto the Badwater Road.

Overheating in The Badwater Basin
Overheating in The Badwater Basin

We got to Badwater itself at around 9.30am – the lowest point in America. It was already starting to get really hot, but we walked out onto the salt flats – just to the begging mind. We watched as one couple just carried on walking on in the heat. Bhavni got so hot she resorted to wearing a shawl on her head. We then headed back up the Badwater road. We took the Artist Drive on the way back – its a one way, which went up into the foothills and round past lots of rocks that were all sorts of pastel colours due to the minerals.

Artist Drive
Artist Drive

Joining the main road (with the crazy guy walking in the heat), we then went back to Furnace Creek and the visitor centre there (reading 109F outside), where there was a nice 3d map of the park and cool AC. From here we continued on our journey stopping at Zabriskie Point, where I ventured out for the climb out to look out at the strange landscape there. We then drove out of Death Valley to Death Valley Junction, where Bhavni took over the drive.

Zabiskie Point
Weird landscape at Zabiskie Point

We had to drive past north, past Indian Springs and into North LV, where we saw the big towers on the strip from a distance (we managed to avoid going into the main city, but did not find a place to stop). We then headed up the SH15, with me back in the driving seat, all the way to St George, where we checked into the Best Western Plus Abbey Inn, which came with a big room. For a really early dinner we headed to the Crazy Noodle Cafe, where we had a flatbread and a Asian salad (along with sweet tea) – very nice. Then off to the supermarket for shopping, to get some supplies to make sandwiches, for the next day, in the hotel.

Friday 24th

Cliffs near the upper pool
Cliffs near the upper pool

So another day waking up early, so we could leave early. The buffet was mostly the usual fare, maybe a bit greater, but with nicer seating. We then checked out and headed to Springdale. As we got there, the signs said the car park in the national park was full, so we parked the car outside stop five in the town, and got ourselves ready – just missing the first bus after we parked. It was a 20 minute wait for the next bus.

Kenyatta Trail
Kenyatta Trail

We got to the visitor centre at 7.40am, but it was closed until 8am. We wanted to ask what to do as my initial idea of Angels Landing would have been way too difficult in the heat. We thought it would be nice to go on the guide led tour, but not only was it full, the drop out list was full also, so we decided to do some of the gentler walks, so we joined the massive line for the buses into the park, which took a little while. We got off at stop 5 – Zion Lodge and started the walk to the Emerald pools, already it was quite warm. We got to the lower emerald pool and spent a bit of time there, before climbing up to the upper pool, which was right next to the cliff face up. On the way down we then took the Kenyatta trail to the Grotto, which gave some nice views.

View up the Valley
View up the Valley

At the Grottos, we took the bus all the way to the  Temple of Sinawava – the last stop – seeing angels landing as we went round big bend. We started to walk to the narrows via the riverside walk, which was nice as it had plenty of shade. We then got to the narrows – that was not what I expected – a stream we had to go through. No wonder we had heard talk about aqua shoes. After much diliberation we walked in with our walking shoes and made our way up to the next bank… oh there was more river. We continued for quite a bit in the water, but when the depth started to get up to our short levels, we decided to turn back. We were not hot though as the water was nice and cold.

In the narrows
In the narrows

Getting out with our wet shoes, we walked it off to the bus point (in more sun) and then got the bus back to Zion Lodge, where we found a place on the grass with a bit of shade and had some lunch, lots of others were doing the same.

We then caught the bus to the entrance, then the next bus to the car, where we had an ice cream (asked for 2 scoops, got the equivalent of 4-6 uk scoops).

Path on Angels Landing
Path on Angels Landing

After the break we then drove into the park and up the Carmel highway, through the tunnel and switchbacks of the pass. We got past Carmel Junction and then drove to Glendale, where we checked into the Smith Hotel. Getting ready we headed out quickly as the German bakery in Orderville closed early. We got there and had some pizza type bread for dinner. Back at the hotel, we chilled for a bit (Bhavni liked Sally Bollywood on TV) then went for a small walk before sunset, but it felt a little odd being the only ones out.

Saturday 25th

Near the Red Canyon Visitor Centre
Near the Red Canyon Visitor Centre

Today was a slightly more relaxed start, with us waking up at 7am. We went down for breakfast and had a leisurely meal with Rachelle and her neighbour discussing politics with us, over our healthy waffle and fruits.

At the end of Bryce National Park
At the end of Bryce National Park

We checked out and headed out around 8.30am going north until hitting the highway 12, where we stopped soon after at the famous Red canyon, with its visitor centre, where they basically said you could spend quite a few days travelling the road and the things to see on the way.

The Famous view in Bryce National Park
The Famous view in Bryce National Park

Well the first place after was Bryce National Park, where I had assumed we would go to one of the viewpoints only, but we were advised to go right to the end and make our way back stopping at the viewpoints as they were going then to be on our side of the road. We got to the end – Rainbow point, where we first stopped, then slowly made our way back stopping at places like Pondereso Canyon, Agua Canyon and others. The final one was at Bryce point, requiring a bit of climbing (especially as it was now warming up), but with the famous view. All in all we were there around 2 hours.

At Park Avenue
At Park Avenue

We then carried on past towns such as Tropic and Cannonville, stopping at an interesting place overlooking a valley near the Grand Staircase Escalante, where we had some beverages. The scenery brilliant as it kept on changing, we stopped at Powel Point for a lookout, then drove past places like the Upper Granneries past Escalante, chasing the couple of clouds (a rare sight on our trip). We stopped here to have a look at the rock hieroglyphics. Deciding to not to take the Hells Backbone Road, as we did not want to mess around in the heat so we carried on on the 12 and then drove up over Boulder Mountain – a nice climb with nice vegetation and views.

Balanced Rock
Balanced Rock

We then stopped for a subway at around 2.30pm, quick and simple, then motored along on the SH24 – a much faster road. But by the time we were near Moap, it was close to 6pm, so we went straight into Arches National Park, it was so late, there was no one at the gate, luckily I already had printed the map. We first went to Park Avenue, what a cool sight, then stopped at various stops along the way like the organ and sheep rock. We got out and had a good walk around balanced rock, then a view at panorama point before going to the parking lot for delicate arch, around 7.30.

The Climb to Delicate Arch
The Climb to Delicate Arch

It was sweltering hot even at this time (no wonder there were scary signs about danger of heat), so it was quite a hard slog up. We started following some others, and thats how we found our selves going up to delicate arch on a really dodgy bit, up steep smooth rock with a large cliff face below us. It was daunting enough that someone who ended up with us seemed to give up as we did not see her after.

Bhavni in front of Delicate Arch
Bhavni in front of Delicate Arch

It was busy but not exceptionally so -There were a few annoying people who were on facetime at loud volume. Taking a few photos, we found a place to sit and relaxed for a while – taking photos with the changing light on the arch (the symbol of the Utah plate). We also took photos of the nice sun set on the other side.

Sun nearly set over the Arch
Sun nearly set over the Arch

Getting back was much easier and safer – we saw where we went wrong. We got back to the car and drove into Moap and into the Super 8. Reception were not very interested and when we got to the room, we found that the floor was quite dirty. It was so late however, we headed to town and luckily got a take away from Jays pasta (they were just closed but Bhavni asked if we could get food). We fuelled up and went back to the room to eat.

Sunday 26th

Double Arch in the morning
Double Arch in the morning

Early to rise at 5.15am, then we had a bit of food at 6, the place was already jammed packed (really not enough space for a hotel this size), so on the road by 6.25am. We headed into Arches (again no one was at the entrance this early).

Bhavni under one of Double Arch's arch
Bhavni under one of Double Arch’s arch

We got to Balanced rock and had a proper walk around this time in the cool. We then headed to the Windows section parking and walking to the Double arch. We spent quite a bit of time chilling under the arches, climbing to different view points. Then we headed to the South window and Turret Arch, before heading to the start of the trail again as the ranger talk was to start at 9.

Sejul under Turret Arch
Sejul under Turret Arch

The walking talk was a gentle amble around the Northern window and to Turret arch with some simple Q&A’s for children, which took around 45 minutes. We took the primitive trail back to the parking lot. We had a quick stop at the visitor centre on the way back then to Moab and the hotel.

The Glasses at the windows
The Glasses at the windows

The room was not clean when we got back, so I actually had to ring up and complain. As we got our stuff ready the cleaner came and we explained the problem, then left them to it. We headed to town to the Laundromat and doing quite a big wash, getting a nice frozen drink whilst waiting (we did a bit of exploring the local shops as well). Getting back to the room, we found it was much better, enough to warrant a tip even. We finished the pasta off for lunch then had a little bit of an afternoon sleep.

The massive Landscape Arch
The massive Landscape Arch

We were back out at 6.30 in the evening, heading to the Devils camp ground in Arches. Parking at the lot, we headed on the trail, which then became a sandy walkway, to see landscape arch. We first passed Tunnel Arch and then Pine Tree Arch (aptly named for the tree), before getting to Landscape Arch. As you can not walk under it its just hard to appreciate just how large it is – nearly 100m, but you get a feel when comparing to the trees under it.

Sunset before the talk
Sunset before the talk

We headed to the amphitheatre next, but as we were early we hunted our a place to watch the sun set, before finding some seats. The ranger talk was about stars, so quite a nice topic. After he pointed out lots of stars and even Jupiter Saturn and Mars as well. On the way back we had a quick stop at park avenue to see the stars in the greater darkness.

Fuelling up we then got to the room, face timed Kenya as it was Mitens Birthday, then had a bit of dinner.

Monday 27th

View at the end of the Island in the Sky
View at the end of the Island in the Sky

Another wake up at 5.15am to avoid the heat with grabbing a bit of food and being on the road at 6.30am. This time we drove towards Canyon Lands national park – the island in the sky section. We were too early for the visitor centre, so we proceeded to the end of the road to the Grand view point – which was spectacular – a massive look down onto the lower surroundings and the maze of topographical features. We did not go for the walk to the tip (Bhavni was not feeling great), so we headed back stopping at many of the viewpoints.

At Mesa Arch
At Mesa Arch

We decided to get out and do the full walk up to Mesa arch. That was nice as it was not very far, and the arch (at our level) looked over the lower surroundings. We then went to the visitor centre (as we decided to not visit upheaval dome as Bhavni was pretty exhausted and the heat was building). We saw a video about geology and how arches are formed then headed back to Moap as the patio talk was a while away and would outside.

Bhavni woke up as I drove into the hotel car park. We had noodles for lunch along with some fruit, then knocked out for a couple of hours.

We spent the evening in the hotel.

Tuesday 28th

To Monument Valley
To Monument Valley

We could afford to have breakfast a bit later then the past few days, it was still very busy. After checking out we drove south towards Bluff. We then took the turning towards Mexican Hat and into Monument Valley. The classic few towers that you see in the films appeared. We veered away from the visitor centre (in retrospect a mistake as it was not that far out of our way). We stopped at Kenyata at the Blue Coffee pot Cafe for tea. Not a normal request as they did not have much tea. Refreshed we asked for the bill, however they said it was complimentary. I felt guilty so I payed anyway.

Antelope Canyon
Antelope Canyon

Getting to Page, we found our selves too early to check into the hotel, the Rodeway inn, so we went a few doors down and had Mexican for lunch. After checking we then got some medicine for Bhavni, from across the road then had a bit of time to chill. At 2.30 we walked up to the next building to check in for the slot canyon tour. We watched some hoop dancing before getting in the cars. Where had the blue skies gone? The sky looked menacing and in fact it rained really cold rain and the wind picked up blowing sand around. In the canyon the wind was less but still there and we kept on getting showered with fine sand. Really pretty place though and we took lots of pictures, with the guide directing lots and saying lots of names such as “dragon eye”, “monument valley” etc.

Anther bit of Antelope Canyon
Anther bit of Antelope Canyon

It had calmed down by the time we got back out. Heading back in the truck Bhavni managed to loose her cap (the one on her head, the camera one also flew off, but we managed to get the driver to go back for it).

After getting back and a quick respite in the hotel room, we set out again and crossed the bridge past glen canyon dam and to a view point overlooking Lake Powell.

Overlooking Lake Powel
Overlooking Lake Powel

After the nice views it was back in the car to drive to the visitor centre for Powell Reservoir. This was nice and had some good views of the Dam as well as information on its construction. We were not there for long as it was soon closing.

Horseshoe Bend
Horseshoe Bend

We then drove to Horseshoe Bend. It was reasonably busy and the walk to the bend was up and over a small hill using a mostly sand path. The bend was impressive and we spent a while taking pictures and walking around. Also amusing were some of the families there. We sat for a while before going back thinking it unlikely that the sun would be visible as it set. The clouds partially broke as we got to our car, but clouded over soon after.

Getting back to the motel we watched some TV and had some light food.

Wednesday 29th

Desert View Point
Desert View Point

Up at 6.30 getting to the reception and then having breakfast. Our drive today was down the SH89 towards Cameron. There were a few view points on the way (the pay for ones we did not bother with), we went to one, it was quite a long walk in the sun to the overlook of the canyon on this side.

The aptly named Grand View
The aptly named Grand View

We stopped at the “trading post” for some food and drinks. I mistakenly ordered a cactus milkshake which was pretty bad (too sweet). We had the Fried flat bread as well which was nice (and unhealthy). We walked around the centre for a bit before continuing on on the 64 into the national park.

Posing at Viewpoint
Posing at Viewpoint

We drove to the Desert view viewpoint. Getting out into the heat we found it was quite a busy place, but it was our fist proper look at the Canyon. We spent a bit of time near the old tower, then made our way to the car and got on our way. There were a few stops that we made on our way at other viewpoints. As we drove along the amount of trees increased until we found ourselves in woods. We then had a decent stop at the Grand View point (aptly named), before going to the visitor centre. We had to park in a further car park as it was quite busy. We got in and ended up watching a film about how the canyon was created, then another film about geology. We got some advice on where to go at night and how to use the buses from the rangers there.

Sunset over the canyon
Sunset over the canyon

Heading outside, it was raining so we were cold and slightly wet by the time we for to the car. We then drove out of the park to Tusayan and checked into the red feather lodge – actually quite a nice hotel. We then walked (in the rain) across the road to the Mexican restaurant for some vegetarian food, then back to the room for a rest.

Fiery Sun Set
Fiery Sun Set

At around 6pm we left and headed back into the park, finding some parking not too far from Bright Angel Lodge, Bhavni got we to carry all the gear. We caught the bus to Powell Point along the Hermit Rd. Amazing views. We then walked over to Hopi point and set our selves up in a great spot. As we sat waiting for sunset it started getting busier, then amazingly the sun broke through. We were treated to the amazing colours with the sunset. We caught the bus back, then got in the car. It was then back to the hotel (with people stopping in the road to photograph wildlife). We had some light food there.

Thursday 30th

We had a lazier start today, waking up and leaving the hotel by around 8.30am. Bhavni took over driving duty at first until we reached Williams (about an hour), where we stopped for breakfast. Its an old route 66 town, and was quite full looking. We parked and had a walk around (seeing all the old memorabilia being sold) looking for a place to eat, settling for Pine Country Restaurant – I had porridge and Bhavni had bread (with lots of butter). Filling up on cheaper petrol I took over driving again and we then drove all the way to Hoover Dam – around 2.5hours. You have to pass into Navada then take the side turning back to the Dam in AZ again. The clouds over Williams had given in to scorching sunshine here, and as parking here was expensive and quite a walk (did not see what the prices in the Dam were), we just parked quickly for a few pictures and then got back on our way.

At Hoover Dam
At Hoover Dam

Getting to Vegas the radio started giving announcements  and weather warnings – cloud was building again. We got into the city catching some of the rain, with some of the roads flooding. Following google maps took us to the back of the Ballagio, so we had to go around to the front (the strip), which took a bit of searching for the entrance, where we parked in the parking garage which was really full. We went and checked in, long lines but did not take too long. We then had to get all the basic stuff from the car and take it down the garage lifts and round to room lifts.

I fetched most of the rest of our stuff from the car, then we chilled for a while. For dinner we booked Largo, the Italian in the hotel. After dinner we wondered around the casino for a bit (placing a few casual bets), then went to watch “O” – a cirque du soleil performance. It was very strange but spectacular at the same time, with the diving into water. We then took to our car fro a drive up and down the strip, with me pointing out as much as I knew.

Friday 1st

In front of Ceasers
In front of Ceasers

We had a lie in, waking up at 9. We had breakfast in cafe bellagio, mostly toast and tea, then headed out. We went first through Ceasers Palace, shopping a bit and admiring some photos at a store. We carried on all the walking through the casinos, stopping for a coffee at starbucks in Treasure Island. Crossing the road, we spent a bit of time getting confused in Wynn, then eventually ending up in the Venetian.

Indoor Canal in the Venitian
Indoor Canal in the Venetian

We spent quite a bit of time walking around the indoor canal (the most number of people in saris that we had seen in America). Getting hungry we then looked for something to eat – Bhavni did not fancy Italian or Mexican. Guess what Bhavni found, a south Indian outlet, so it as idlii for lunch. We then walked up to Paris (not as cool as I thought it would be) before heading back to the hotel for some rest. For dinner, we went to Noodle in the hotel – ordered a bit too much.

Saturday 2nd

Checking out reasonably early, (after picking up a croissant which took too long), we loaded up our car and headed out on SH15 south to LA. Its a really busy road, though luckily only traffic the other way in places was standstill (4th July weekend). Its not that interesting a drive after the views we had seen over the holiday. We stopped a few times only (once at an outlet), before arriving at Nans house. Its right on a hill so had a really nice breeze going through and a nice view. We relaxed there with most of the family for a bit, then went for an hour shopping round the same outlet we had stopped at. Back at Nans house we had a proper Indian meal (including bitter gourd curry).

Soon it was time to go, it took a good 40 minutes to get to the rental place, but dropping the car and getting the bus to LAX did not take too long. We had online checked in earlier, our seats were not next to each other, but no matter who we asked they said to ask the next lot of people. Boarding the plane was a bit of a rush, meaning that when we wanted to board they asked us to put our one hand luggage in the hold. Protesting the woman at the gate was rudely indifferent. Luckilly one of the attendants (Bernard) just let us wait until the other passengers had loaded to see if there was room – there was plenty. The flight itself was not great and we had not managed to get seated next to each other.

At Washington the next morning after transferring and finding a place for tea (sort of – only 2 tea bags in the whole place) we found that our flight was delayed a bit. So waiting for a while, the delay was extended – waiting for a part. All we could do is wait. Then the best – flight is cancelled, so we had to go to a counter to get our boarding passes for the next flight, which was leaving at 6pm. If they had cancelled straight away we would have had enough time to go into Washington city from Dulles. However as time was limited we went the Steven F Udvar-Hazy Centre, associated with the Smithsonian. Its full of flight and space craft. First we listened to a nasa expert talking about the Blackbird then the space shuttle, then another tour about fighter aircraft, before we saw a 3D film about earth from the space station.

Getting back to the airport we boarded the plane (really full) for another red eye flight, getting back to London at 6.10am. To top off our experience, the mini cab was late, with us waiting 45 minutes outside.

Kenya 2016

Sunday 27th March

Bhavni came home from her night shift, around 10, giving us a bit of time to pack the final bits before Milan came at 12, to pick us up for going to a hall in Bounds Green for a Jamwanu, where we had lunch and met Bhavnis east London crew. Getting back home at 3 we rested for while until 5pm (Bhavni Snoozing) when we were picked up to go to Anji’s house for some tea and snacks. Leaving at 6, Milan dropped us at Heathrow terminal 3, allowing us to check in, go through security and then shop for a bit (Electronics, Chocolate and Wine) before boarding the Quantus A380 to Dubai. Managed to watch the theory of everything before sleeping for a bit.

Monday 28th

Arriving in Dubai airport, we had a quick look at the shops and thought everything is silly money (fitbit was £200 as opposed to £150 in Heathrow), so instead we settled ourselves at a cafe and had an expensive 2 milkshakes, before boarding the 777 to Kenya, which had smaller seats, but we got 3 of them. Managed to watch a bit on the flight, before arriving in Nairobi.

Nairobi airport as usual was fun as getting the visa took ages. One guy offered to fill my form (partially), then asked for Christmas money, then in the queue, people just kept on jumping in the queue, and the person behind the desk was as usual very happy.

Getting out the airport at 3.30, Bhavnis mother and Surya Masi were waiting for us at a cafe, so we crossed the road whilst Kimaru got the car. There was not too much traffic on the way and we got  to Surya Masis. We met with Miten and Bijal, then chilled before dinner with everyone. We left for Nyeri around 9pm, where I fell asleep in the car. Getting to Nyeri, Bhavnis father was waiting for us, then we had the obligatory tea before getting to sleep.

Tuesday 29th

This morning was a late start as we had a lie in. We had a breakfast of porridge and the works, before getting ready and and setting out down the road at 12 for our walk around town. We spent quite a bit of time 2 doors down at Bhavnis “grandma”, as she was feeling quite poorly. We then just ended up going to the shop, where Bhavnis mother came to get a few items, so we just hung around there for a while until we went back with Bhavnis mum for preparing lunch. We had lunch when Bhavnis father came home, then we relaxed. Around 5pm, it got really cloudy and than the heavens opened for a heavy rain storm – within minutes the barrels were overflowing. The rain lasted a good 2 hours. Dinner was late at 9pm, which was after Bhavnis uncle came from Nirobi. We were cleaning up after dinner, and were expecting guests to come over. Bhavnis father went into his brothers room to talk, closing the door behind him. Well someone had come, so I went to open the door; looking out the door viewer there were a few guests, but after opening the door, 2 assailants walked in with the guests – one with a pistol and one with a rifle. I thought it was a joke initially going as far as to push the pistol away, until I was the serious expressions on the rest. We walked in and went were told to go to the kitchen – but luckily Bhavnis mother had pushed the silent alarm. Anyway, we ended up all staying in the kitchen on the floor, whilst Bhavnis mother was made to go around the house. After around 10-15 minutes they fled firing a few shots as the security firm came. All in all with all the guests that came in (including after the assailants came) 15 phone, lots of wallets, jewelery etc had gone.

The police when the came, just had a big discussion together, until we asked them to take it outside, as they really were not going to do much after picking up the shell casings by hand. We then had the fun of canceling lots of phones and contacting everyone – mother got confused when I said muggeni – going to sleep after 1am.

Wednesday 30th

So today we woke up and chilled at home most of the day – I did lots of reading. Miten & Bijal came in the afternoon. We had guest come over, and the phone did not stop ringing all day. After the guests went we went for a round. Getting back, we made dinner – garlic bread and pasta soup, and after eating we went to outspan for a coffee.

Thursday 31st

We woke up early to see off Miten and Bijal at 6am, after which we went back to bed. I then got up much earlier than Bhavni.

The morning went by with lots of Frying going on and I helped make bits and pieces. I went with Bhavnis father to help sort out chips for their I phone that Miten had left. After I dropped Bhavni and mothering to “next door” for some singing, then I went to Greenhills for the next hour and a bit, where I updated the I phone. I left and got to the house for 5.15, to see the maids out and then ended up waiting for an hour for Bhavni and mothering to come back.

There was not much going on in the evening, so we packed as we are meant to go Nairobi tomorrow. After we ate dinner, had some guest come over, then it was bedtime.

Friday 1st

Indian Delegation
Indian Delegation

After waking up, we had to get ready for the Indian High Commission that were coming, so after breakfast we dropped mothering to the temple around 10.30 then quickly went back to get ready before going back. At the temple we waited around an hour as the muppets who invited the high commission took them around for coffee without informing anyone that they were doing so – I did not realise this at the time, so I was not sure why Bhavni wanted to leave and go to Greenhills. We went there and I had a beer before we went back and had the lunch at the temple. After finishing off, Bhavni and I went to police station to pick up the abstract (the guy wanted a small bribe to write it). We thee got home where we found out that not everyone was going to go to Nairobi. This soon became no-one at all was going – Grr! So after we gave up and went to Aberdaya country club with Bhavnis mother – we used the town road as the normal road had a sign saying do not use in wet weather. The road was quite bad, but we got there fine and had some drinks. Getting back the road felt better in the dark. Back at the house we went to bed early.

Saturday 2nd

There was not much going on in the morning – we just had breakfast then Bhanvni and I went for a round to the shop. We got back to the house and went back out with Bhavni’s mother to go the Market, where we spent the next 1.5 hours. We got to the house just after Miten, Bijal, Anji and the noisy one arrived, (with two emergency phones from the uk). We helped everyone settle on, had lunch and then Miten, Bijal, Bhavni and I went to Aberdaya country club. We played cards in the sun, before going in the room with the fireplace and TV. It was 2 hours by the time the others turned up. We stayed for a little while longer, before we headed back home where we had dinner. The others play cards till late, but we called it a night.

Sunday 3rd

At Barneys
At Barneys

The morning as usual involved lots of food making and a guest (which required tea and snacks) at end meant did not leave till just after 12. Bijal had looked up a place called Barneys, which was a cafe on an airfield next to Nanuki, so we went there in 2 cars, Miten driving one and me driving his. We had an interesting incident right at the place, as we missed the turn, but as we stopped, a taxi did a dodgy overtake and knocked a motorcycle over, but just carried on. We helped out a bit before going to Barneys.

Mt Kenya Safari Club
Mt Kenya Safari Club

We had a selection of stuff – pizza, pasta, mexican and salads, with a couple of planes taking off on the strip. As it was early still we decided to drive to Mount Kenya Safari Club. Apparently it is 1000bob min spend for each person – Miten however payed the guy to get us in for 2000bob. As we got there it started raining, so we sat inside (after a brief time face timing and playing chess) and had some drinks. After the rain cleared, Bhavni and I had a walk (with Saanya in tow), then we just chilled until after 6.30 when we left. It was just Bhavni, Bijal and I in the car as the noisy one jumped ship.

We got back at a reasonable time, and had the food that they had made in the morning (Dhai Wara), then we slept relatively early.

Monday 4th

Saanya the Chef
Saanya the Chef

Miten & Bijal left a little late in the morning (6.30am) in the pouring rain, after which we went back to bed for a while. The morning was as usual, breakfast and helping out, but after we went for a walk around town (after stopping next door), with Anji and Saanya in tow, so a bit sedate. We got all the way up to the top of town, before going into Bhavnis Venchand Mamas shop, where immediately Saanya asked for an ice cream, and got the largest she could hold. We then went to the shop, where the rest got a lift back in the car. I just quickly walked back alone – it looked like it was due to rain, but it did not. There were water issues going on at the house, the plumber was changing stuff, well ignoring this we had lunch, and after cleaning up persuaded all to go to Greenhills. I had my usual Tusker Malt and we played cards until nearly 5. We got back and sorted out clothes, before dinner of Mutter Dockri, after which we ended playing cards until late.

Tuesday 5th

Two Rhinos
Two Rhinos

So the usual morning start, but Miten sent us the hotel voucher just after 9.30, but as Bhavni was doing work with Saanya (who got stressed out at Bhavnis patience), and with a last minute wiring job by me, we left nearly at 12. We went quickly to the shop to say bye, then to the station to fill up air (amusing watching them have to fix the air as we are there). So an hour later we got to Nanyuki, then turned left towards Sweetwaters. The road was under construction so was quite bad, but to out surprise, we found ourselves already entering Ol Bujeta, so we had to pay park fees – I let Bhavni sort that out.

White Rhino
White Rhino

We arrived and check in, took stuff to our tent (one of the old ones), slightly freshening up then going to the restaurant for lunch, just as it started to rain. We had soup, then helped our self to the buffet. We told the guys not to bother coming tomorrow.

A lion walking near the camp
A lion walking near the camp

After lunch we went on a game drive, taking a guide with us (it was 4pm). I was cool going around in our own car – we saw lots, Buffalo, antelope, giraffes and then a couple of rhinos. The guide got a phone, so I drove back at break neck speed (relatively) to near the camp, where we saw some lions, including a chilling male.

The lion in the dark
The lion in the dark

After getting back at 6, we relaxed for a bit before going on a night game drive. This was quite different, as we saw lions in the dark, plenty of rabbits, hyenas, jackals and others. We had an interesting 2 hours, before getting back. We had dinner, then made our way back to the tent for an early-ish night.

Wednesday 6th

Morning at Sweetwaters
Morning at Sweetwaters

Even with best intentions, we missed the sunrise, so we waked up properly at 8am and went to have breakfast (was not going to go for a dawn drive). We asked for a seat near the windows, but they would not move us, but promised that they would for lunch time.

Max the angry ape
Max the angry ape

We went out on our own at 9.30, our first stop (with animals on the way) was the chimp sanctuary. The timing could not have been better, as the troop just came to the fence. The most amusing one was Max, who came really angrily as there were some trucks that started making noise, he looked like a small child in a ape costume. We then had a walk with the guide, further in to the secondary site, but the other troop were not around, but it was still a nice walk in the increasing heat.

Bhavni saying hello to Baraka
Bhavni saying hello to Barraka

From the chimp sanctuary we had a really indirect drive to the rhino sanctuary. This was really good as we got to see some elephants, giraffes and more white rhino on the way. At the sanctuary we had a turn each feeding some sugar cane and patting Barraka, who was a 20 year old blind black rhino (one eye from a cataract, the other from fighting). We did not see the southern white rhinos, so we headed out doing a bit more touring before getting back for lunch.

Elephants Crossing
Elephants Crossing

The seat they gave us was better, as I had a window seat, but Bhavni was still next to a wall, so we asked for dinner if they could do something for us. After lunch we rested for a bit as it looked like rain, and the temperature fell markedly.

A giraffe with the darkening skies
A giraffe with the darkening skies

I was feeling sorry for the neighbour, and invited her to join us for game drive at 5. After seeing the rain never came, we went to the club house at 4pm and relaxed there. At 5 I look for Lisa (the neighbour), but after 20mins I give up and we headed to the car park, where she just arrived having gone on a tour (so much for her not having anything to do). Anyway we all went on the drive, which was really good again. We saw most animals, apart from a leopard.

Night at Sweetwaters
Night at Sweetwaters

Getting back we freshened up and then went to the club house and had a drink in front of fire (Amarillo for me and Stony for Bhavni). We then went for dinner at around 8, where they had set up a table for 2 in front of the window, so we could see the watering hole, with candles etc. The view was good as we saw elephants and rhino at the watering hole whilst eating.

After dinner we went to bed early. However we were woken up for a couple of hours by what the staff later said were tree hyraxes.

Thursday 7th

Sunrise
Sunrise

Today we actually got up for sunrise, I was out first and went around to the clubhouse to get to a good spot, Bhavni just made it in time. Back to bed for a bit before going for breakfast, where we had a leisurely meal for an hour till around 9.30.

We checked out and saying bye to the neighbour, we headed out. As we were leaving we saw a massive herd of elephants, we tried to get to a road that went a bit towards them, but we could not get to them. So leaving the park, we filled up some petrol at Nanyuki and then headed back to Nyeri.

Lots of Elephants
Lots of Elephants

We got back just before 12, where they were making buscuits, which I got roped into helping with. This then turned into frying, helping make chuckris. Saanya got into the action as well.

In the afternoon we went to Greenhills and played cards – Saanya enjoyed the swings. Coming back we made some green curry for dinner, but ended up eating early as the shop did not close till late. After Bhavnis father had come home and eaten we had to drop a worker to his house, that was quite far out.

Friday 8th

It started a normal day, apart from repairing the wallpaper in Bhavni’s parents room as best as I could, then with us going for a walk near midday, however Bhavni was a social butterfly, meaning we were at people shops for 30 minutes at a time, meaning we got to the shop as they were closing. However Anji was there and wanted to take her father for some blood tests. So an hour later (after a menu of blood tests), we got back after 2 and had lunch, sorted last minute things and then left at 3.30 to go to Nairobi.

The drive was not that bad, we got there in 3 hours, just one really slow truck that even tankers had to overtake. We got to Surya Masis at the same time as Miten, had a bit of time to freshen up, then went to Furasatu (after dropping Surya Masi to Savaita Masis). Nice dinner with Sushi and Korean. We then went to a place near diamond plaza for ice cream, before going home.

Saturday 9th

After a chilled breakfast, we went to Mitens flat to see the problems. The most obvious one was that so many of the floor tiles were either damaged or at different hights. I left Miten to this and made a massive list of other problems to fix. The problem is that the builders do not see any other way of doing things, and even if you explain a better way they will not do it even after agreeing. Another example is that showers where they just put gaps where dirt will remain. On the plus side, the flat was very nice otherwise.

After having enough, we went to a place called Odds and Ends to look at the furniture they were choosing. It took a long time due to the traffic. We had a look at some of the furniture they were looking at and some ideas.

Purdy Arms
Purdy Arms

After we went to the Purdy Arms, an old colonial haunt, where we sat on the veranda and ordered way too much food, Miten and I had a draft beer. A while later we got back to the car and soon the heavens opened with torrential rain. We tried to go to a place called Giraffe manor, but they would not let us in as you had to book first. So we went back home.

We relaxed for a bit before leaving for westlands to go to the cinema. Mehul and Bijal’s sister joined us to watch Zootopia. Apparently we had to stand to the flag of Kenya, but I did not know. We saw Rajvi (Parita’s sister) there.

After the film we dropped Surya Masi home from her sisters then went to the new hotel hangout that the guys frequent for a drink, whilst the rest did sheesha.

Sunday 10th

We had a slight lie in this morning, then after a lazy breakfast we went with Miten and Bijal to see the bed place, before going to Bijals parents house. We got home then left Bijal and Miten there as they had to go to Oshwal, whilst, Bhavni, Surya Masi and I drove to Rotli Wave for lunch meeting her Kanti Mama there. Quite nice food, we got there at a good time as it became very busy by the time we left.

We got back and waited for a bit until the rest came (Nyeri had gone to Oshwal). It was then lots of visiting (4 places).

Indian Goodbye Photo
Indian Goodbye Photo

For dinner we went to Slush, with lots of other people. Getting back, we finished sorting stuff and then headed back to Nyeri. I fell asleep for a bit, getting woken up as we got up the hill, with the torrential rain, which had reduced visibility to silly levels. Back at Nyeri at 12.30, we had a tea before bed.

Monday 11th

The morning was raining quite a bit. Richi came over in morning to say bye and collect some food. The morning was lazy, I did lots of reading, then got roped into making buscuits. After lunch we went to Outspan and chilled for a while, reading and just enjoying the sun.

Getting back to the house, we had dinner, then played some cards into the night.

Tuesday 12th

A better morning, meaning we went for a walk, almost the usual round. Back for lunch, after which we went out to Outspan again for a while. We then went to the shop, where we ended helping with the unloading of the delivery van until late. Getting back, it was a case of dinner, packing then a short game of cards.

Wednesday 13th

By the time we were ready to leave to go to Nairobi it was close to 11. On the way, there was some buying of fruit including a whole bunch of bananas for 300bob. We got to Surya masis, had a bit of time to sort out last minute bag changes and sit down for lunch. Nirav and Miten made it in time. Kanti Mama had a colleague who was on the same flight as us to the UAE, so he accompanied us to the airport (after a last minute wait for something from Kanti mamas house).

We pretty much had to check in and go through to the departure lounge. On the way we had 3 seats between us, so we had a comfortable flight watching some movies.

In Dubai airport we chilled in Giraffe (ordering a big plate of Nachos), managing to face time using a VPN to let everyone know we were ok. The flight to the UK was quite full. I got some fitful sleep. In the UK we got out bags quickly enough and Bhavni went to work directly whilst Akshey picked me up and dropped me.

York 2016

Thursday 11th February

After a last minute decision to go on a break, we found ourselves up reasonably early, though with the last minute shenanigans we ended leaving a little later than planned (8am), so we hot a bit of traffic initially, but luckily the motorways were good (and we just missed getting caught in the queue from a pile up as we were only a couple of cars behind) . With a couple of pit stops, we got to the hotel (Middlethorpe Hotel) in York by 12.30. We were checked into room 29 (2nd floor in the stables).

Hotel Garden
Hotel Garden

We were a little hungry after all this so we went to the drawing room and ordered an afternoon tea to share, we ended sitting on a couch near a large low table, so it seemed we were taking the best place, but it was the only place available then. We had to make sure we ordered a different sandwiches from the normal, so it all took a while before the food came – Sandwiches, 2 scones and a few little cakes/desserts. It was surprising how filling this all was.

Spa Building
Spa Building

So after the few hours there, we went to the spa, where we spent a good 2 hours (sauna, jacuzzi and swimming). Refreshed we then got ready and after facetime to Kenya, drove into town at 6.30, parking in one of the public car parks. We then walked into the old town and across the river, where we stopped for a drink in the Slug and Lettuce. The bar man who served us was quite new and gave Bhavni a drink that defiantly was not ginger beer, but it got sorted straight away. It was nice sitting out of the chill overlooking the river and having a drink. We then walked to “Le Piano” which was a vegetarian/vegan restaurant. The food was slightly strange, some bits nicer then others. I had a burger in a gluten free bun, with veg chips, whilst Bhavni’s had rice and aubergine which was not that great. The hot chocolate was not bad – and it was made with coconut milk.

After dinner we got back to the hotel and I tried to watch a bit of TV, but soon I was asleep.

Friday 12th

View from
View from Cliffords Tower

So no lie in today as I had got up around 7.15. We got ready and went for breakfast – It was a continental breakfast with some cooked options. We had porridge on top of the continental and I had poached eggs also. We got out and I left Bhavni relaxing in the room, whilst I went to the spa, for my massage, that Bhavni insisted I have, at 9am. After the massage, I went downstairs where Bhavni just walked in for her massage. So I relaxed in the spa, with Bhavni joining me a little later.

York Minister
York Minister

We then got ready and after initially thinking of taking the bus walked into town as we could not be bothered to wait. It was just as well as we got into town without seeing a bus. We stopped at a cafe, for a pannini. I had an americano and Bhavni had an ice cream take away. It was quite cool seeing places we saw around 5 years earlier and remembering taking photos then, such as cliffords tower. We had quite a long walk around seeing the city before we decided it was time to go to Betty’s tea room. We found the shop and went upstairs, but it smelt quite a bit so we left before getting a place. So we thought we would go to an alternative place, but there was another Betty’s tea room ahead, which we went to. There was around a 20 minute queue, before we got seated, ordering one afternoon tea between us, and some special sandwiches – nice. We then had another walk around before heading back to the hotel. There was a brief panic about loosing the camera cover, which was in the bag, so we managed to get back just a bit before the sun set.

Bettys Tea Rooms
Bettys Tea Rooms

So we had a little time to relax in the hotel room, before we got ready and drove into town, parking in the same car park as the day before. We again made our way into the town proper and scouted the restaurant since it was on a weird side street – it looked OK. We had some time we went to the Slug and Lettuce again, much busier today. I had pint,  whilst Bhavni had a mocktail (which was 241 which we did not no about). The dinner at Krakatoa was surprisingly nice, mix of indian and thai flavours.

Getting back we were awake enough to watch King Julian on netflix.

Saturday 13th

Snowdrops
Snowdrops

So we went for the lie in – getting up at 7.45, so we could go for breakfast not to late. We both had porridge (with cinnamon) and I had my usual poached eggs, though I tried fried bread which was a mistake. After breakfast I went to the spa, leaving Bhavni in the room pretending to sleep, though she joined me 30 minutes later. So we got out by 11 finished packing and checked out.

Abbey Ruins
Abbey Ruins

We tried to drive to Harrigate, where we though we could stop for a bit, but  there was so much traffic around that area that we bypassed the center and carried on driving to Fountains Abbey. The road was a small country road and we had rain and hail on the way, which made for an atmospheric drive.

Ruined Window
Ruined Window

Getting in, the car parks (much to Bhavnis disbelief) were quite full, but we parked and changed into waterproofs as the weather was unpredictable, then made our way in. We were trying for a guided walk at 13:30, so we had a bit of time. Inside Bhavni realised she was peckish, but the restaurants further in were closed, so we just walked a bit until the talk/walk started. It was really quite cold, especially when standing still, accentuated by the sun going behind cloud cover. So even though it was quite an interesting talk, and the ruins of the abbey are hauntingly lovely, Bhavni soon began to have trouble concentrating – Lay brothers and choir priests, quarters, sheep crisis and trade – and after 40 mins or so, went back to the entrance cafe. I carried on with the tour which lasted another 30 minutes, with the sun finally coming back out near the end. Fun fact was that this was a sister abbey to Jervaulx abbey where we stayed 5 years ago.

Abbey Ruins
Abbey Ruins

After the walk I made my way back to the entrance and found Bhavni wondering if I’d been kidnapped. She had left some hot soup for me and we had some scones and tea. After Bhavni made a trip to the car to put on her warmer shoes we braved the cold again. This time to walk past the abbey and onto the water gardens, round the deer park and back to the entrance. I dont really think the deer park and the walk near the main road are worth it, but the water gardens are nice.

Water Gardens
Water Gardens

We got back and found ourselves leaving at around 4.20. We had come quite north, so it even took some time to go past the York exits. If we drove straight to London, we could get there for 9ish, but we thought we should get some food on the way. Bhavni booked Jamies Italian in Milton Keynes for 8.45 as that was the earliest booking available. Fine, we got there just a bit past 8 (odd place to drive and park), so just stayed at the bar till time having a drink. I was disappointed that the polenta chips were not vegitarian, so we had to settle for fried pasta parcels and breads and dips for starters which were generally nice. However mains were a disaster. My pasta was weird with lentils and spices, giving a weird taste, Bhavni ordered and Ariabiata, and gave me what she thought was a cheese covered pepper garnish which I put in my mouth. It was not that – it was a slice of scotch bonnet, so I was in a bit of pain for 5 mins. But her pasta really had no flavor bur chilly. We could not even have dessert after that. Setting back out, we manged to get back home near 11pm.

Barcelona 2015

5th December Saturday

La Sagrada Família
La Sagrada Família

An early start today as the flight was at 6.50am. So after barely 2 hours sleep, I woke up at 3am, followed by Bhavni, getting out the door at 4am. It was a clear run to Luton, where we parked in the mid term parking and immediately got on the bus to the terminal, meaning we were quite early (80 minutes until the gate was even announced). So we sat and got a coffee whilst Bhavni got on with the work she had to do on the laptop. Soon enough we were boarding for our flight – which was good (We were told our bags would have to go in the hold but due to me not reading our boarding pass we got the bags stored at the front).

The palm columns
The palm columns

Arriving in Barcelona we got out of security quickly and got a map from the tourist info, before heading to the train station and getting a train to Passeig de Gràcia (T10 ticket). The station was around a 15 minute walk to the hotel – H10 Art Hotel. Our room at this time (10.30am) was not ready yet so we sat in the lounge and Bhavni carried on with her work. I think the guys felt sorry for us as very soon they gave us a room, however the room given was a really basic inner room, so we went down and soon enough (after showing the booking and saying we would never go for the basic room), we were given a correct room. We stayed in the room until around 1.30, which was the time required for Bhavni to finish the work, me to check it and then submit it.

Central area of La Sagrada Família
Central area of La Sagrada Família

We got freshened up and then headed out, taking a walk to La Sagrada Familia. We decided to just join the line instead of pre book. Well as we approached, La Sagrada Familia suddenly came into view and Bhavni said “what is that ?” – surprise! Well we got into line and got our ticket for 3.45, so we had enough time to get a pancake, before going in (at 3.30). It is a cool space with the interesting faces on the sides with the completely different styles. Inside, its a massive space, they had put in the stained glass since I was in last, so the light was nice, with the palm columns. Bhavni was impressed by the structure. We had got the audio guide, but I was disappointed with them as the order we had to go was reverse the original order, so it kept referring to items we had not seen yet.

Old Hospital
Old Hospital

After leaving, we walked down towards Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, stopping on the way at a cafe, for coffee/drinks and bread with olive oil and tomato. We got a good view of La Sagrada Familia whilst walking. The hospital is a UNESCO site, and was a nice looking building (where a colleague of Bhavni’s worked for a while). After looking around we walked round the hospital, up hill then towards Park Guell, which was amusing as Bhavni kept on saying “are we carrying on” and we did – just to see around the next corner. By the time we arrived it was getting quite dark, so after abandoning taking photos, we walked down towards Garcia neighborhood.

Pasta Factory
Pasta Factory

We spent a bit of time (mostly window) shopping in the neighborhood. Getting hungry we went into “the pasta factory”, where we had some really nice pasta for dinner all for under 25 euros. We then made our way back to the hotel (quite a long walk) and crashed early.

6th December Sunday

Church Cloister
Church Cloister

We woke up at 8am today, getting downstairs for our buffet breakfast. Lots of tea, fruit and bread (along with a few hash browns just for me). We managed to leave by 10.15, walking down Les Ramblas to Plaça Reial. We were early, so after registering and getting our little stickers with “runner bean tours”, we explored for around 15 minutes.

At 11am we got back and were introduced to our guide, Catherine originally from Ireland.

Neo Baroque Walkway
Neo Baroque Walkway

The walk was in the old town or Gothic quarter over the next 2.5 hours. The tour took us first to Plaça del Pi and the Bascilla there, before going to the old Jewish Quater with the stories of the persecution there. We found that it was really busy, it turns out that we had picked a bank holiday weekend till Tuesday for our trip. So it was a struggle getting to Plaça Sant Jaume, which was busy with the “christmas” markets as such (though they believe in a log with a smiley face over the holiday). We then went to the cathedral of Barcelona and into the Cathedral cloister, which was open to the public today due to the holiday. We then went to the quiet Plaça Sant Felip Neri, then saw parts of the old Roman City, before heading to Plaça del Rei and finally to Santa María del Mar (the peoples church).

Arc de Triomf
Arc de Triomf

After the walk we asked about where to go for food and were advised of a place for now and one for dinner. We walked past the massive line to the Picasso museum, and decided it was not worth the wait. The place recommended was a tapas bar, where the service was a bit lack luster. We had three tapas; nacho’s, fried peppers and tomato bread.

We had a walk around the little shops, and through the Parc de la Ciutadella, seeing the Arc de Triomf before getting to the Palau de la Música Catalana for around 5.30. We got in and had to stay in the crush for a bit, before we could go into the hall and to our seats. It was really full (unlike when I had booked), but our seats were not bad at all.

When Carmen started – I realized it was not Spanish, but French, not that it helped understand much more. Its amazing how much of the music you recognize. During the break we went down and got a coffee/sparkling water, before going back in. Bhavni had a wee little siesta.

Finishing we exited and went looking for the restaurant that we had been recommended – well we went round the place and it did not exist, but instead there was another pure vegetarian restaurant close by called Teresa Carles (so probably the same place). It was a 25 minute wait for the table. The food was not bad, but not that amazing either – Bhavnis “pizza” was a little burnt.

After dinner we walked back to the hotel and did a bit of reading into Montserrat.

Going up to Montserrat
Going up to Montserrat

We had decided to go to Montserrat today, which involved an early wake up at 7am, so we could have an early breakfast. We got our stuff together, walked to Diagonal station and caught the green line until Espenia station, where we went to the trains. With the help of a guide we got tickets – upgrading to the return trip with both funicular journeys. The train was meant to leave at 9.36am, but it was delayed leaving with us having to move carriages – but luckily we still managed to get seats.

The train arrived at the cable car station at around 11am, and we had to wait for the second cable car to go up – it was a bit of a squeeze. Well is was quite misty with further peaks harder to see. Hopefully it would clear a bit I thought. Anyway we had a little wonder around, and had a not very helpful conversation with the info staff there. We then joined the main queue to go into the monestry. It took around 30 minutes to go inside – which was not bad as i thought it would be a lot longer – in the mean time the clouds thickened and it started drizzling in earnest (luckily we were sheltered). In side we passed lots of religious artifacts and alcoves, which then culminated in the statue of the Virgin Mary, which pretty much everyone kissed as they went through (the bit that was not encased in glass). We did not, but it was amusing that Bhavni did not notice the view behind down into the main chamber of the church. We then after exiting and going through the candle area, entered the main chamber and sat for a bit, where Bhavni noticed where she had been.

After we went to the funicular’s and caught the one down to have a look around (we did not feel like walking to the black statue). We got a few photos of the very misty scenery, before heading back up (trains were at half summer frequency). We then took the funicular to the top (with the first proper Indian family – that I have seen the whole holiday – talking loudly). As we went up, everything disappeared into the fog, so that at the top we had only 50m or so visibility. We stayed up only enough to get a few shots and look at the exhibits there, before getting the same train down and proceeding to the cable car. It was a good thing we did as there was a queue there due to lunch break. We were just able to get on the next cable car down, and make the train which arrived 5 minutes later, back to Barcelona.

Back in Barcelona, we arrived back at Espenia, where we got out, and as it was late for lunch, we went to the shopping mall right next to it and had pancakes and bagels for lunch. We then walked out past the magic fountain (and the car show that was on) and up the hill (using the many escalators) to the art museum. It had already closed at 3pm, so we walked around into the Olympic park, taking our time and waiting for sunset near the communications tower. As we had plenty of time we walked back to Espenia and to the Arena for some shopping.

We made our way back to the musical fountain for the 7.30 show, or no show… so we waited for the next scheduled one at 8, which did not happen either. Well that was 45 minutes of waiting for no reason. So we got the train back to the hotel and got our selves ready for dinner.

We went to a restaurant called Margerita, which was a couple of blocks away and had some great reviews. It was quite busy, but we got a table and had some nice starters (including a massive ball of cheese – mozzarella), a nice pizza and stuffed ravioli for mains, with a nice half bottle of wine to accompany it. Recommended.

After dinner we went back to the hotel and booked park Guell for tomorrow and then called it a night.

I got up at 7.30 today as we had to pack before having breakfast. After which we checked out, leaving our two bags for collection later. To go to park Guell, the reception suggested we take bus 24 from outside the station, however that turned out to be a mistake as two 24 buses came and refused to stop as they were really full. So in the end we took the train to Lesseps and walked to the park (getting a coffee on the way). Its not that bad getting up the hill as they have escalators to help. We made it there around 11.10am, and went into the park proper.

Gaudis park is quite different with lots of weird flowing shapes and terraces. We started at the top, through the odd walkways with their different columns. After which we spent a bit of time in the show grounds area, which was really busy. There were great views of the city and the sun was out. So after chilling for a bit we went through the gardens (which were not that interesting) then to the entrance stairway and then the columned area underneath.

After avoiding the person doing modeling we proceeded out of the park and above it, where I sat in the sun on a park bench for a bit listening to a busker playing the guitar. We then went down to Lesseps and caught the train to Drassanes, which was the closest station to the sea front on that line. From there we walked over the “Rambles de mar”, a bridge over the docks to the shopping mall there. We had a little look round the shops there before getting a ice cream and looking out over the water. We could see the W hotel from here.

We then walked back over the bridge and had a wonder through the old town near Las Ramblas. As it was lunch time we had it at a falafel place, which was quite good – I got some excellent chips. It was exhausting watching the lady serving as she was doing so many jobs at the same time. We then found our way to a shop which sold aprons (that Bhavni wanted to see from our walking tour), where we got a couple more presents.

We then went back near the hotel and wondered around the shops there, before calling it a day and having a couple of crepes with spiced tea.

Getting back to the hotel, we did a final pack in the lobby (which was a real struggle as there we had bought a decent amount of stuff on top of nearly full bags). We headed out at 6pm to Diagonal then the train to the airport at Passeg de Gracia. At the airport we went through security and all I wanted to do was sit down as I was really feeling unwell with the cold. So much so that when we got on the plane I knocked out for most of the flight (having told Bhavni I was sitting next to the window).

Back in Luton, we got to the car around 10.30 as the buses were a bit slow, meaning we got back home at 11.20 after a stop to get milk.
